Statement from Geoffrey Cox QC MP.
“Following the notice of temporary closure of Tavistock MIU earlier this year, I urged the Trust to commit to ensuring this valuable service will reopen; I have continued to monitor the situation closely.
“I was therefore dismayed to be informed by the Trust that the unit’s re-opening will now be delayed until the New Year 2020. I have sought urgent clarification as to the reasoning for this delay and required and received assurances that the unit will reopen in the New Year and the closure will not be extended further.
“They have confirmed that although the temporary closure has now been extended, recruitment of additional staffing is taking place and the unit will reopen as soon as possible with a strong and resilient staffing structure to ensure its future.
“In a rural area such as this, with the nearest A&E in Plymouth, it is vital that we have access to important local health services such as the Tavistock MIU. I am glad that the Trust has confirmed to me its unequivocal commitment to the MIU in Tavistock and I shall certainly hold it to that commitment.”
